About Books 2 Prisoners

Louisiana Books 2 Prisoners is a 100% volunteer and 501(c)(3) non-profit effort to correspond with Louisiana inmates and mail them reading materials free of cost.  Our short-term goals are to encourage literacy, to make prison-life more endurable, and to support prisoner interests to the best of our abilities. It is not our place to necessarily radicalize prisoners, but rather to use our resources and privileges as the un-incarcerated to pass along materials on requested subjects.

We currently serve only the Southeastern United States, meaning Alabama, Arkansas, the Carolinas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, Tennessee, and the Virginias.  Letters from Louisiana and female inmates are given priority, with all other letters answered in the order in which we receive them.  We’ve chosen to restrict our service area to decrease the lag-time between receiving a letter and sending out books.   For a mostly complete list of prison books programs that cover the states we no longer serve please check the National Prisoner Resource List.

If you have a loved one locked up, please have them write us a letter describing what books they are interested in:

Books 2 Prisoners needs your support! We are always accepting donations (especially if you have college level dictionaries), wrapping materials (paper grocery bags and packing tape), and of course money for our postage costs. Please get in touch. We are primarily interested in donations of educational materials at this time, especially black history, language, and dictionaries.

The cost of sending one package is $3-5, but we appreciate donations of any amount.  Thank you for your support.
